Prepared for November 7, 2026, the 59th anniversary of the Public Broadcasting Act.

An introduction for some. A reminder for others.

A shared history.
A local future.

This paper is for newer employees and longtime public media veterans, including the leaders and boards making consequential choices about their stations.

It follows early educational broadcasting, examines the original Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, and makes the case for learning across generations, dependable local service, and national partnerships that strengthen stations’ relationships with their communities.

Help tell the local story

What’s your local station’s educational origin story?

If you have one to share, would you share it with me?

Perhaps your station began in a university classroom, a school district, a library, or a community effort to make learning more accessible. I would love to hear who started it, whom they hoped to serve, and what those beginnings still mean today.

Historical photographs, early program schedules, and archival links are welcome. Please share what you know, and distinguish documented details from memories or questions that need more research.
